La.Cu.Na

Julia da Mota, Jemma Appleby and Ricardo Carioba
Curated by Natacha de Oliveira
LAMB | London, UK, Dec 2016 – Jan 2017

“LAMB presents La.Cu.Na, a group show by artists Julia da Mota (b. Brazil, 1988), Jemma Appleby (b. 1987, United Kingdom) and Ricardo Carioba,(b. Brazil, 1976).

The relationship between these works are their desire to express the essence of a space, fictional or real, using subtraction, between the abstract and the figurative. They translate and define the architecture of a space through its atmosphere, or Stimmung- the authenticity that is constituent of every landscape. (...)

Julia da Mota studied architecture before getting a masters in Visual Poetics at the University of São Paulo. In these intimate compositions, that resemble an after image– a vision left in the retina after you close your eyes– Mota synthesizes volumes and planes of perspective taken from characteristic architectural elements she observes in the chaotic landscape of São Paulo. The punctual white areas reveal the emptiness, spaces with a lack of building– such as demolitions and parking lots between buildings– inviting the viewer into a vanishing point.”
