BIO

Julia da Mota is a Brazilian visual artist living and working between Paris and São Paulo. Born in São Paulo in 1988, she completed her Master’s Degree in Visual Arts at the University of São Paulo and earned a B.Arch degree from the University of São Paulo/ENSA-Paris La Villette.

Da Mota’s practice is based on the fields of painting and printmaking, where she explores the relationships between color, form, and matter to create works that come from a phenomenological approach towards space, as well as from her intimate experiences. Drawing inspiration from Minimalism, Geometric Abstraction and Brutalism in architecture, Da Mota’s body of work addresses the possible links between man-built space, the idea of landscape, and their limits. In her research, she investigates the tensioning of boundaries– between the external and the internal, the constructed and the void; between passage and permanence, between the public and the intimate.

In recent years, Julia da Mota has exhibited her works in museums and galleries throughout Brazil and Europe, such as Casa das Artes in Belém (Pará, Brazil), Ribeirão Preto Museum of Art (São Paulo, Brazil), Blumenau Museum of Art (Santa Catarina, Brazil), Janaína Torres Galeria (São Paulo, Brazil), Galería Fermay (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), LAMB Arts (London, UK) and Association Mouvement d’Art Contemporain (Chamalières, France). She has been continuously developing her research through artist residency programs, including Pivô Pesquisa (São Paulo, 2021), foNTE (São Paulo, 2019), East London Printmakers (UK, 2019) and LAMB Arts Billingbear (UK, 2018). Her works are present in collections in Brazil, the United Kingdom, the USA, Argentina, Australia, Spain, Portugal, and France.

Da Mota is currently an artist in residence at Cité internationale des Arts (Paris, Jan-July 2024).
